Two Things You Should NEVER Say Before a Speech or Interview

“I can’t wait for this to be over!”  “I’m too nervous to do this!”

When your self-talk or outward talk exclaims, “I can’t wait for this to be over” a domino effect begins to take place.

  • You will talk too fast. Nerves make most people go faster than they should any way, but once your main goal is to “get it over with” your speed can increase dramatically.
  • This will not only make you seem more nervous to the audience but they will miss most of the content you are firing at them because they can’t keep up with your pace.
  • Wanting to “get it over with” will also make you forget the whole point of a good presentation- giving your audience something of value, helping them understand and benefit from your information.

When you declare “I’m too nervous to do this” to yourself or to others you’re assuming that you should be better at public speaking then most people. The majority of folks get nervous before speaking, even professionals and experienced speakers.

  • It’s part of the territory. Nerves mean you care and you want to do a good job.
  • People with a complete lack of nerves often come across dull and flat. A “been there done that” attitude can kill the energy of any presentation.
  • Just because you are nervous doesn’t mean you aren’t going to do a good job. Plenty of people do a great job in spite of being nervous.
  • Those nerves are the same as the ones you get jumping off a high dive or doing something daring. The more you allow yourself to feel them the less sensitive you will become to them and you’ll soon be using them to your advantage to harness a dynamic presence that audiences will love.
